Hand-rearing banned for 11 years already!

Banned again for 11 years

The Parrot Foundation, together with the Bird Advice Practice, campaigned for a ban on hand-rearing baby parrots. Signatures were collected through numerous events. A report was written in collaboration with Animal & Law to scientifically substantiate the claim that hand-rearing is not in the best interest of the baby parrot, the parents, or the future owner. Hand rearing is a cause of health problems and structural behavioral problems. This has serious consequences for the female, as it will lay more eggs. This was/is a major reason for hand-rearing due to the significant commercial interests.

The campaign was successful because hand-rearing was prohibited by law as of July 1, 2014. It was a unique success, both internationally and internationally. For the first time, legal regulations existed to safeguard the health and welfare of parrots.

As always, when major commercial interests are at stake, some breeders/traders continue to use illegal hand-rearing to profit. Because the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) barely enforces the law, this practice persists. Attached is an article about a notorious trader who was exposed and convicted.

Read, watch and shudder
